Coca-Cola has tested a water recovery and reuse system for use in all 804 of its bottling plants. The system takes beverage process wastewater and purifies it to high standards for use in non-product applications. The process involves chemical (chlorination) and biological (membrane bioreactor) treatment steps, ultrafiltration, RO, ozone treatment, and UV disinfection. Some 126 chemical and biological parameters were measured on the effluent to track its quality. The reclaimed water meets all drinking water standards even though it isn’t used for human consumption. Coca-Cola has been installing this process in its plants over time, and has now completed all but nine facility changeovers (KO Sustainability, 2016). So far KO has saved about 45.7 billion gallons of water. At energy giant Xcel Energy, its large Cherokee Station coal-fired power plant near Denver was connected in 2004 to the output from Denver’s water recycling plant, nearby. The Cherokee Station now uses about 5,200 acre-ft./year (1.693 billion gallons/year) of reclaimed water in its cooling towers. The plant still uses very large amounts of raw water, but it has saved huge volumes in the 14 years it has run the reclaimed water system. Since 2005 XEL has cut global water use by around 35% (XEL Water Management, 2016). XEL will likely need to recycle more, at more of its plants, in the years ahead.
