All of our publicly-traded corporations also face clean water issues, as they usually draw their workers from urban environments, and sometimes very heavily use the available local water resources. Corporations are under constant social, political, and investor pressure to reduce their environmental impacts and improve their stewardship of our natural resources, with water being a major concern. Corporations are also under constant pressure to cut costs. For example, corporations like International Business Machines (IBM) and Intel (INTC) use absolutely enormous amounts of water to manufacture semiconductor chips (Fishman, Op. cit.). At a single chip plant in Vermont, IBM produced 80,000 gallons per hour of ultra-purified water for cleaning chips off during the manufacturing process in use in 2010. IBM has since sold off the chip manufacturing part of its operations, but while it still had them, IBM drew its water for the Vermont plant from Lake Champlain. It then ran the water through 18 filtration steps to produce ultra-pure water for cleaning the processing chips. IBM was so concerned about their water use and its cost that they created a water monitoring and recycling technology that is state of the art (which they market to others), and it has saved millions of gallons per year in that plant alone. IBM recently estimated that they saved about 21 million cubic meters (7.397 billion gallons) of water globally in the period 2000-2015.
The nights are cool and I’m a fool Each star’s a pool of water, cool water But with the dawn I’ll wake and yawn And carry on to water, cool, clear, water,
“Air quality does always change,” admits Blueair’s chief product officer, Jonas Holst, when we chat. “We cannot promise to our consumers that you will always have super, super, clean air. But we can promise to consumers that you will always have a lot cleaner air by having our product — because it depends on what happens around you. In the outdoor, by your neighbours, if you’re cooking, what your cat does or something. All of those things impact air quality.
India obviously already has severe water supply and distribution problems, and will likely face a subcontinent-wide water crisis by 2030, based on demographic and urbanization trends (Chart 13). The country currently relies on groundwater for some 60% of its agricultural water supply, but farmers are withdrawing far more water than can be replaced naturally, via some 21 million tube wells (Maggie Black, 2016; The Atlas of Water: Mapping the World’s Most Critical Resource, University of California Press, Oakland, CA, 128p). As a result, water tables are dropping from 1 to 4 meters per year in many areas. And agriculture still takes 80% of the total fresh water consumed in the country, in spite of widespread, acute water problems. The truly shocking thing however is that this massive agricultural water consumption is only about 30% efficient, meaning that 70% of that water is actually wasted (or 56% of all fresh water in the country). Indians pay a horrific price for this waste.

China has freed more than 850 million people from absolute poverty in recent decades, a period in which the ruling Communist Party made a simple pledge to its population: Avoid interfering with the political order, and prosperity will be yours. This contract worked for China’s middle class, which grew from 29 million in the 1990s to some 531 million in 2013. In 2019, however, Beijing’s mission has become more complicated, and Liu’s story is typical of the 228 million migrants who work in China’s cities today. These workers, known as nongmingong, have seen their wealth increase, but their place in Chinese society is largely unclear. China’s cities are becoming more and more hostile to the people on whose backs they were built, and the nongmingong are not feeling the gains of the government’s promise.
